Reducing IBS Flare-Up Inflammation
Sometimes I screw up pretty bad. I'm just a human what can I say? I learn lessons and then I either ignore or forget them. And in terms of IBS, this occasionally leads me to a state of full blown inflammation. My intestines feel swollen inside my body and hurt to even touch from the outside. Sometimes I even feel like there is heat radiating off my abdomen, like I should ice it.
Anyway, this is a state I prefer not to be in. And when it happens, I have a few tricks up my sleeve to take things down a few notches sooner than later. Since I am currently right in the middle of this scenario, I am planning a weekend full of all these remedies/activities which I am pretty darn excited about. Self-care at it's very best. Here's what I've come up with:
Cancel all unnecessary plans
First up, I usually try to cancel all the activities that I can. When I'm in this state not only am I in pain but I am also incredibly tired. Even venturing out for a hangout with a friend feels like too much work. Sometimes a social scenario is nice to take your mind off things but if you're not up for it, your friend will forgive you. Maybe do a FaceTime.
Stop doing what You've been doing
Duh. Like stop doing what is causing the pain. For me this can be a whole range of things. Stressing, eating some sort of offending food, overdoing probiotics, etc. Sometimes it's a mystery, but if there is anything you suspect might be the culprit just cut it out for a while and see if you feel better.
Back to the basic foods
My go-to is always a version of the GAPS Intro Diet. Brothy soups, reduced fibre, good fats. It works like a charm and gives the digestive system a much needed break. This alone has brought me down from major inflammation in just a few days.
This is like an ice pack from the inside! Makes sense right? I often make a huge mason jar of it and sip it throughout the day. It instantly feels soothing.
Pulling out all the stops in the most delicious ways. The turmeric latte has become one of my very favorite drinks since I discovered Blume Turmeric Latte mix. I tried making my own lattes with my own spices but ew, I did a bad job and it scarred me. So now I use Blume, froth up some of my own homemade almond milk and add a little bit of honey. Then Bob's your uncle, amazing anti-inflammatory action for your insides.
So yes I actually have a vape pen. It's from a little company that I discovered at a medical marijauna fair held at an actual legit university nearby. I'm not totally sure if it's legal just yet? Who knows, but it's a really easy way to take CBD for its major anti-inflammatory effects. While at the fair I also came across a tea company called Fleurs that makes CBD based teas. I tried the Doze version for anti-stress and sleep and it was lovely.
Epsom salt bath
I loooooove myself a salty bath. With that said, sometimes I feel too lazy to have a bath. Seriously. It's not like it's a hard thing to do but the idea of it seems like too much work? Anyway, it is worth it. When I'm feeling less lazy, I'll pair it with a dry skin brush and a Camu Camu face mask. Other times, I'll just pick a podcast and soak. The magnesium in epsom salts is so good to relax the muscles in the body and even the intestines. When the gut feels all stressed and clenched up, have a salty bath and go to sleep. Likely you'll wake up feeling like a brand new human.
In whatever way suits you best, just relax. Let it allllll go. For me this often means zoning out with a TV show on the Netflix and/or reading a book. Otherwise I'm a busy little bee, laptopping, online shopping, Pinteresting, planning my life, etc. which are all a bit too stimulating when I'm trying to come down a few notches. Maybe even hide the laptop. Sleep with you phone outside your bedroom. Disconnect for a bit.
Most of all, when you're in this state remember that it's just a phase that will pass. You probably learned a lesson or two that will help you on your way of healing in the long term. This is just the universe telling you to stop and recalibrate for a minute. Take some time for yourself and know that two steps forward, one step back is just the dance move of healing. Also if you just want to cry totally go for it. Heck, I'm crying a little bit right now.
